When it comes to your engagement session, there’s a lot to think about! Most couples are hoping to capture the perfect shot for their save the dates, get comfortable together in front of a camera or get to know their wedding photographer ahead of their big day.

Engagement photos are forever, and you want you and your fiancé to look your best. Not sure how to prepare for your session? You’re not alone. Here are 5 tips that I share with my brides:

Be yourself. Select outfits that are authentic to you – that make you feel like yourself. While as wedding photographers, we have tricks for helping couples look more comfortable and natural in front of the camera, it’s often those impromptu and genuine moments that translate into the best shots. Stick with pieces in which you feel your best – save anything that you’ll be fussing with, is too tight or may make you feel uncomfortable for another day.

Coordinate, don’t match. You and your partner want to complement each other when it comes time to selecting your outfit choices, but not show up in matching outfits. Go for complementary colors or solid colored items over patterns or prints. Overall, try and stay away from anything too busy – you want your looks to feel balanced not distracting.

Don’t limit yourself to one outfit – aim to bring two! This will allow you the flexibility to sport two looks, but not spend your entire session running around for multiple outfit changes. I recommend going with one outfit that’s a bit dressier and one that’s more casual. You want to show off who you are as a couple. Looking for a money-saving tip? Keep it neutral. You want your love to stand out, not your outfit. Keep your clothing selections in the cool or neutral tones to help bring out that beautiful light and bright photo look. Itching for color? Introduce a fun accessory for that extra pop as an accent.

Splurge on hair and makeup. We already know you’re a natural beauty but call in the experts to enhance those features. You don’t have to go full glam, but a little extra actually translates beautifully into photographs. Use this opportunity to test out a stylist that you’ve had your eye on or as your trial before you book an artist for your wedding day. You know you need to book a trial run with them before your wedding anyway — why not put this time to good use and have your hair and makeup done for your photo session?
